Low-cost Garbage substitute

Two years ago, U2 wanted too much money for their song to be used in Donnie Darko, so the producers inserted a song by San Diegans Michael Andrews and Gary Jules. Their chilled-out version of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” was perfect for the film and ended up at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart.

Now another San Diego band has benefited from a larger act’s economic standards. A.M. Vibe’s song “Tantrum” was included on the Jan. 15 episode of Cold Case, apparently because Garbage’s Shirley Manson asked for too much money. “We literally found out about it ourselves the Tuesday before it aired,” said A.M. Vibe bassist Michael Porter.

This is the second time Garbage’s financial demands have paid off for A.M. Vibe. Last spring the group’s “Strawberry Smell” was included in the Ashton Kutcher film, A Lot Like Love, for the exact same reason. “Apparently A.M. Vibe has become the go-to band when [Garbage] wants too much money,” Porter joked. “Stay strong, Garbage—hold out for the big money.”
