Garbage ‘Super Psyched’ About New Material

Butch Vig(5/3/00, 1 p.m. ET) – Garbage is back in the studio working on a follow-up album to 1998’s Version 2.0. The band united recently after a four-month hiatus to begin work on a collection of B-sides and remixes; however, after a few meetings, they decided to start work on a third album containing all-new material instead.

In a letter posted on the band’s official website (www.garbage.com), lead singer Shirley Manson says, “We’ve shelved said aforementioned project for the time being and have gotten stuck into writing some brand-new songs instead. Needless to say, we are super psyched.”

Although the band consists of four unique musicians, Manson has become a modern-day Debbie Harry. Like Harry to her band Blondie, Manson rapidly became the image of the group. LAUNCH asked fellow Garbage-mate Butch Vig if it bothers him that Manson gets the majority of the publicity.

“I’m relieved,” Vig said. “When we first started touring, everybody just wanted to talk to me about Nirvana and the Pumpkins. It was very annoying. The reason that we started Garbage is that I just wanted to write and play music again, and I never particularly felt that comfortable in the spotlight to begin with. In a lot of ways, we’ve also built up some defenses to protect ourselves, so we’re, we’re pretty cool. We can deal with just about anything.”
