Garbage’s Shirley Manson Calls MTV Video Awards ‘Horrid’

Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson took time out from recording lead vocals for the group’s next album to share some thoughts about the recent MTV Video Awards. She caught a rerun of the televised event and it made her feel “horrid,” according to a diary entry posted on the group’s official website (garbage.com).

Manson writes: “It sort of reminded me of being back at my high school end-of-term party. All the pretty, popular girls (Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez et al) being boo-d but wooed by the popular naughty boys (Fred Durst, D’Angelo et al) whilst all the smart or ugly girls, boygeeks and misfits were either not invited or were left standing solo.”

She adds, “It made me depressed. I don’t want all the rock stars and pop stars being all chummy with each other. It’s so phoney [sic] and smug.” Garbage’s last album, Version 2.0, was released in 1998.
