Garbage: happy to be nominated
Although he doesn’t think Garbage will win the Album Of The Year or Best Rock Album at tonight’s Grammy Awards, drummer Butch Vig intends to celebrate.
“It’s pretty mind-blowing just to be nominated, especially for the ‘big kahuna’ award,” Vig says. “It’s a remarkable year in that category anyway, with all the women nominated in all different genres. That couldn’t have happened before. We see ourselves as the underdog. But it’s been a good year. We made a record we are happy with, played some good shows, and made some good videos. Part of the great thing about being nominated is that you get to go to all the fancy parties.”
Not that Garbage’s entire jaunt to Los Angeles will be rest, relaxation, and rocking out at ritzy soirees. While in la-la land, the band (whose current single “Special” is No. 19 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks) will shoot a video for “You Look So Fine.” Vig explains, “We are very keyed on making videos. We usually talk our ideas out in abstract terms and then go to a director to make it happen. We want the director to have a lot of input. Plus, the four of us need a mediator.”
Garbage also intends to hit the studio to work on B-sides and some remixes before rejoining Alanis Morissette on her U.S. and Canadian tour as the opening act. When things cool off, the band plans to spend more time doing soundtrack work.”We have some possible soundtrack things going down right now, but we want to do more. We are all huge film buffs. In fact, we don’t listen to that much music on the tour bus. We prefer watching films. We want to score an entire film when we finish this tour. That would be a challenge. I guess we’re lucky that a lot of directors and producers think of us as a cinematic band.”
